EARLY demand for container slots from the Port of Newcastle is being primarily driven by grain and meal exporters, reports Bulimba, Queensland's Grain Central.
This uptick in demand coincides with the Port of Newcastle's launch of its second service, following the New South Wales Government's passage of legislation aimed at removing financial obstacles for the port to facilitate regular containerised trade.
Presently, the Port of Newcastle provides a monthly containership service, and there are plans to go to a fortnightly service as demand grows.
Port of Newcastle executive manager Matthew Swan noted that agricultural producers and agribusinesses have played a pivotal role in attracting a dedicated container service to Newcastle.
'Grain and meal exporters have been leaders at this point with established trade relationships between New Zealand and the South Pacific aligned with the existing service,' said Mr Swan.
'There remains strong interest from grain, cotton and meat exporters for regular services from Newcastle to realise landside efficiencies.'
'Transshipment options through other Australian east coast ports can provide opportunities for shippers to access Asia, the US, and beyond.' said Mr Swan.
