LONG BEACH July cargo was down 9.7 per cent year on year to 621,780 TEU, while Port of Los Angeles volume increased 9.1 per cent to 912,154 TEU.
Long Beach July imports decreased 9.9 per cent to 313,350 TEU, and exports shrank 6.8 per cent to 111,654 TEU. Empties were 11 per cent lower at 196,777 TEU.
'The trade war is hitting the west coast hard,' said Port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero. 'For more than a year, the supply chain has bent under the weight, and there's very little give left.'
For the fourth consecutive month, the Port of Los Angeles has set a new single-month cargo record, officials announced.
'Container exchange per vessel reached 9,915 TEU, the highest and most efficient level we've ever experienced,' Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka said. 'Despite the continued decline in exports and high level of uncertainty driven by trade tensions, we continue to optimise our facilities and are grateful for the support and confidence of our supply chain partners.'
July LA imports increased 8.7 per cent to 476,438 TEU compared to the previous year. Exports decreased four per cent to 161,340 TEUs while empty containers increased 20.7 per cent to 274,376 TEU. It was the third-busiest month in the port's history and the fourth time cargo traffic eclipsed the 900,000 TEU mark.
