Fire fighters starting to gain control of the fire

Aboard the 'Eleftherios Venizelos' the situation was becoming more and more manageable on Aug 30. he firefighters managed to reach the main outbreak of the fire in the morning hours. Under difficult and extremely dangerous conditions, they threw thousands of tons of water and foam thereby limiting the flames. Also smoke development wai considerably less than in the previous days. Now the forces were appraching other parts of the car deck which were not yet accessible. The first totally damaged truck was removed from inside. The truck carried a general cargo, and only the carriage was left. The fire brigade could release several vehicles. They managed to open a side door in thecar deck from which a lot of water flowed out that had accumulated inside. The forces have managed to move deeper into the parking area and gain better control of the fire that was burning on the port side of the ship. The biggest problems created a lorry loaded with chipboard-synthetic wood. Two anti-pollution vessels collected contaminated water to avoid a pollution.
