INVESTMENTS in capacity and technology are underway at Europe's largest container shipping gateways to prepare for the expected surge in volumes and embrace a more digitised and automated future, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
The Port of Rotterdam has revealed plans to expand the fully automated capacity of one of its main terminals and improve hinterland connectivity.
Meanwhile, the neighboring Belgian hub of Antwerp-Bruges has launched an extensive digital radar and camera network to efficiently manage its substantial shipping traffic.
Last year, Antwerp-Bruges successfully handled 13.5 million TEU, reaching its terminal capacity limits.
To accommodate future growth, the port aims to add 7.2 million TEU in capacity by the end of the decade.
In 2022, Rotterdam recorded a volume of 14.45 million TEU, and projections indicate that an additional eight million TEU will be required by 2035 to meet growing demands.
'In the coming decades, container shipping will continue to grow ... Rotterdam aims to facilitate and encourage this growth in a sustainable manner,' said Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO Allard Castelein.
'By investing early in the construction of new quay walls, we can now offer our clients the necessary capacity. The economic impact of container shipping is and remains high.'
