Duisburg climbs up the box port volume rankings while others lack traction

GERMANY's inland Port of Duisburg was ranked 41 with a container handling of 3.4 million TEU in 2014 by the London trade journal, Container Management.

This now puts duisport ahead of European ports like Le Havre (2.6 million TEU), Barcelona (1.9 million TEU), and Marseille (1.2 million TEU) as well as US ports such as Houston (2.0 million TEU) and Miami (0.9 million TEU), noted transportweekly of Riga, Latvia.

"As the only inland port among the TOP 100 container ports, duisport is underlining its position as the world's largest container handling location in the hinterland," said Duisburger Hafen CEO Erich Staake.

Additional measures, such as the hub concept duisport has developed in the last few years for customers from the logistics and loading industry, has further reinforced the attractiveness of the location. 

This positive development is largely based on the successful investments of the past few years, associated settlements of international customers, and the expansion of the port's handling capacities, said transportweekly. 

The Port of Duisburg now has a total handling capacity of five million TEU. "Combined transport will remain the essential growth driver at the port in the future as well. With our demand-oriented expansion and development of terminal capacities, we have created the conditions for further growth," said Mr Staake.

In September, two further rail cranes will commence operations in the logport I DIT Terminal and logport III Terminal.

In this way, container handling could be increased by 10 per cent to 1.8 million TEU (January-June 2014: 1.6 million TEU) in the first half of 2015 despite the currently difficult economic environment.

"Of course, the strikes in the rail freight traffic sector and China's markedly weaker economic growth have had an effect on handling in Duisburg," said Mr Staake. 

"Yet the positive development in the container sector shows one can generate growth with integrated transport and logistics concepts, even when there are stagnating handling figures in the sea ports. 

"This is why we want to continue to expand our market share in 2015 as we have in the past few years," Mr Staake, forecasting a six to seven per cent in container handling.
