DSV A/S, a prominent Danish logistics company, is set to launch its own cargo airline next month, operating out of the lesser-known Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, reports New York FrieghtWaves.
This strategic decision aims to attract the emerging semiconductor and electric vehicle industries in Arizona by offering direct service that bypasses the busy Los Angeles International Airport.
Under a 39-month lease agreement with the Phoenix-Mesa airport authority, dsv will utilize a 22,000-square-foot hangar as a temporary terminal for processing cargo on large freighter aircraft.
DSV has partnered with Cargolux and Atlas Air to provide dedicated transport utilizing Boeing 747 cargo jets.
Cargolux will commence weekly scheduled service from Luxembourg on June 5. Meanwhile, plans are being finalized for Atlas Air to transport cargo from Hong Kong and Taipei to Phoenix-Mesa starting in July.
DSV Global Airfreight Procurement head Mads Ravn has confirmed the intention to establish a direct flight route from Phoenix-Mesa to Latin America, offering export service back to Europe and Asia in the third quarter.
Notably, DSV's operations at Phoenix-Mesa will build upon an existing operation facilitated by Atlas Air, connecting to DSV's original US hub at Huntsville International Airport in Alabama, with onward flights to Miami and Sao Paulo.
To inaugurate the new airfreight location, DSV will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local officials and stakeholders.
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, situated near the larger Phoenix Sky Harbor airport, may seem an unconventional choice for international trade. However, this secondary airport with three runways, once a US Air Force base, primarily serves regional airlines like Allegiant.
DSV's decision to establish scheduled cargo service at Phoenix-Mesa aligns with a growing trend among logistics companies and all-cargo carriers.
They are increasingly utilizing second and third-tier airports, where they receive priority treatment at a lower cost than significant passenger airports.
Smaller airports offer advantages such as robust infrastructure, focused services, extended operating hours, and efficient customs clearance, making the handling of inbound shipments more efficient.
