DHL Express Finland has opened a new EUR15 million (US$16.6 million) gateway terminal in Pirkkala/Tampere able to handle 5,000 shipments an hour, reports London's Air Cargo News.

Daily flights between European Hub Leipzig and Helsinki Gateway connect DHL Express Finland to the global network. The other two Finnish Express terminals are located in Tampere/Pirkkala and Turku.

The 4,000-square metre terminal serves the express pick-up and delivery operations in Pirkanmaa area and handles both export and import shipments for the whole of northern Finland.

Additional space and capacity were required to serve both the business to business and rapidly growing private customer e-commerce sectors.

'Given the sustained growth of international e-commerce, DHL is committed to strengthening our global network and services,' said DHL Express Europe CEO Alberto Nobis.

'Over the years, we've invested significantly in our infrastructure all across Europe, to increase efficiencies and to improve delivery capabilities. Our hubs and gateways are the backbone of our global network which connects businesses from all industry verticals and private customers alike, and enables them to benefit from the ongoing e-commerce boom,' he said.
