Danish Shipping Adopts Policy on Biofouling ManagementDanish Shipping has announced a new policy supporting the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) guidelines on biofouling management, aimed at protecting marine ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. Biofouling—the accumulation of algae, barnacles, and other organisms on ship hulls—is a significant contributor to the spread of invasive species, which can disrupt marine ecosystems across the globe."Reducing the risk of transporting invasive aquatic species into vulnerable marine environments is crucial," said Nina Porst, Director of Climate, Environment, and Security at Danish Shipping. "We encourage regular monitoring and hull-cleaning using non-toxic, long-lasting coatings, along with innovative hull designs and technologies. Our ships cover vast distances, and it's essential to ensure we do not carry invasive species that could harm marine ecosystems during our journeys."Biofouling not only threatens marine biodiversity but also increases fuel consumption due to added friction on ship hulls. Studies show that even minimal fouling, such as algae or barnacles, can raise drag by up to 55%, significantly impacting fuel efficiency. Proper Biofouling Management minimizes these risks, enhancing both environmental protection and operational efficiency.“We must take the necessary steps to safeguard the marine environments our ships navigate,” Porst emphasized. “Implementing effective biofouling management not only helps protect the environment but also reduces fuel consumption, making it a smart choice for both environmental and business sustainability.”Danish Shipping recommends that its members adopt the IMO guidelines, which, while not mandatory, provide a comprehensive framework for managing biofouling. The organization also advises maintaining records to demonstrate adherence to these guidelines.By embracing proactive biofouling management practices, Danish Shipping aims to lead the way in balancing environmental responsibility with operational efficiency.
