PRESIDENT of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) and CEO of Lemissoler Navigation Philippos Philis has been elected as the new vice president of the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA).

Expected to accede to the presidency of ECSA in two years' time, Mr Philis becomes one of the first Cypriots to hold a leading role at an international shipping association alongside CEO of Tototheo Maritime Despina Panayiotou, who is also the current president of the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA), reported Seatrade Maritime News, Colchester, UK.

'The election of a Cypriot vice-president at the helm of European shipping, is considered a milestone for Cyprus shipping and a national accomplishment for Cyprus in general, reflecting the high recognition Cyprus is enjoying among the European shipping community, as one of the leading maritime centres worldwide,' said the CSC in a statement.

Mr Philis founded Lemissoler Navigation in 1996. The company currently manages 26 vessels ranging in size from 2,000 deadweight tonnage to 180,000dwt, including 16 vessels that it owns.
