CHINA Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), the liner arm of China Shipping Group (CSG), is ordering 14,000-TEU ships, according to Trade Winds.
What makes this move unique is that they are bound for service to the US east coast, where US channel depths cannot take a fully loaded 14,000 TEUer and even an expanded Panama Canal will be limited to 13,000 TEUers.
In addition, China Shipping has five 19,000-TEU vessels being built, and UASC has six 18,000 TEU ships and eleven 14,000-TEU vessels under construction - an order that is worth over US$2 billion with deliveries due to begin at the end of this year.
United Arab Shipping Company's (UASC) confirmation last week that it has ordered five 18,000-TEUers and five 14,000 TEU vessels for delivery between late 2014 and mid-2015 is the first major challenge to the top players' vessel capacity supremacy.
