CONTAINERS destined for the US and sent from 10 major countries and regions in Asia rose by 3.2 per cent year on year in July to 1,529,701 TEU - the first year-on-year growth in two months. However, year-to-date box volumes were down 0.4 per cent to 9,380,501 TEU.
According to data released by Descartes Datamyne, container traffic heading to Asia declined by 9.1 per cent to 451,838 TEU in June, and inbound volumes were down 3.3 per cent to 2,960,200 TEU in the first six months of the year, Hellenic Shipping News reported.
Containerised shipments moved outbound from China to the US in July decreased by 2.2 per cent to 916,910 TEU, marking the sixth consecutive month of year-on-year declines, the statistics compiled using US Customs and Boarder Protection's Automated Commercial Environment (ACE).
Containers from South Korea rose by 3.4 per cent to 156,118 TEU, followed by those from Vietnam, which soared 37.3 per cent to 100,650 TEU, enjoying a year-on-year increase for the eighth consecutive month.
Containers from Taiwan surged by 21 per cent to 94,963 TEU. Also brisk were those from India and Thailand, which ballooned 20.7 per cent to 45,126 TEU and 26.4 per cent to 38,527 TEU, respectively.
