X-Press Feeders, Global Energy Trading Pte Ltd (GET), and PSA Singapore (PSA) successfully conducted the first simultaneous methanol bunkering and cargo operation (SIMOPS) in Singapore, reports New York's Marine Link.
The operation took place at the new Tuas Port, supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), various government agencies, and local research institutions.
During the SIMOPS, the mass flow metering (MFM) system for methanol and digital bunkering was also trialed.
This achievement follows the inaugural ship-to-ship methanol bunkering for the 2,100-TEU Laura Maersk in July 2023 and the successful ship-to-ship methanol bunkering of approximately 1,340 metric tonnes of blended methanol for the Stena Prosperous on May 24, 2024.
During her maiden voyage from Asia to Europe, an X-Press Feeder container vessel was refueled with nearly 300 tonnes of bio-methanol by GET, an MPA-licensed bunker supplier.
The refuelling was conducted using MT KARA, a dedicated IMO type II chemical bunker tanker classified by Bureau Veritas and operated by Stellar Ship management Services.
Methanol fuel was supplied simultaneously while the container vessel completed its moves. SIMOPS is preferred for container vessels to enhance operational efficiency.
The cargo operation utilised PSA's double trolley quay cranes and automated guided vehicles at Tuas Port, completing the SIMOPS in four hours.
These operations demonstrate that the Port of Singapore is ready for commercial-scale operations for shore-to-ship, ship-to-ship, and SIMOPS methanol bunkering.
The same methodology is being applied to other new maritime fuels, such as ammonia and hydrogen.
