CONTAINERSHIPS, CMA CGM intra-Europe specialist has carried out its first refuelling with liquefied natural gas, announced the French shipping giant. CMA CGM will take delivery of nine 22,000-TEU vessels from 2020 as well as two 1,400-TEU vessels, all equipped with engines burning LNG.

Some 234 tonnes of LNG were bunkered onto the 1,400-TEU Containerships Nord at Rotterdam, making it the first LNG-powered containership in the CMA CGM fleet.

Containerships also has a fleet of LNG-powered trucks, thereby enabling the group to offer LNG throughout the transport cycle.

'Containerships reinforces its commitment to the energy transition of the maritime industry. The use of this fuel indeed represents a real technological breakthrough which yields significant benefits compared to traditional heavy fuel oil with up to 25 per cent fewer CO2 emissions, 99 per cent fewer sulphur emissions, 99 per cent fewer fine particles emissions and 85 per cent fewer nitrogen oxide emissions.
