CMA CGM is engaged in serious discussions with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to potentially construct up to ten 24,000-TEU ships fueled by methanol, reports London's Loadstar.
Although cma CGM has not responded to requests for comment, it appears that the negotiations are indeed taking place.
While Yangzijiang has previously built feeder vessels for the carrier, this would be its first order for ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), and the construction would likely take place at Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu, the only shipyard group capable of building boxships of this size.
Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu has recently delivered a pair of 24,000-TEU vessels, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Irina and MSC Loreto, equipped with scrubbers, for long-term charter to MSC.
The shipyard has an additional four similar vessels on order, making them the largest boxships in the world at present.
Yangzijiang, being the largest non-state-owned Chinese shipbuilder, reportedly has the capacity to deliver methanol-fueled containerships between late 2025 and 2027.
CMA CGM already has 24 ULCVs powered by methanol on order: six of them with a capacity of 15,000 TEU from China's Dalian Shipbuilding and Jiangnan Shipyard, and 12 vessels with a capacity of 13,000 TEU from Hyundai Samho in South Korea.
Furthermore, last month, the carrier commissioned an additional four ships from China State Shipbuilding Corp., including the aforementioned six 15,000 TEU vessels.
This transaction is widely seen as a state-to-state deal, with CMA CGM chairman Rodolphe Saade signing the contract during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to China.
