CMA CGM Mermaid, the inaugural vessel in a series of 10 developed through collaboration between the container line, Chantiers de l'Atlantique, and Hyundai Heavy Industries, promises emissions reductions of up to 20 per cent compared to VLSFO ships, as asserted by cma CGM, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
One of the most notable features of the ship is its forward superstructure, a design element previously unseen in the CMA CGM fleet.
With dimensions of 204.29 metres in length and 29.6 metres in width, the vessel is engineered for enhanced aerodynamic and hydrodynamic efficiency.
These ships are designated for routes in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, augmenting CMA CGM's existing fleet of over 30 vessels operating on alternative fuels.
The company aims to have nearly 120 ships powered by low-carbon energies by 2028, a feat made possible by its significant investment of over $15 billion in fleet modernisation.
'Between April and July, six of the series will join the Intra-Northern-Europe line to serve the Baltic and Scandinavian ports from the hubs of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. Four other ships will join the Intra-Mediterranean line between the end of September and the end of November,' said CMA CGM.
