BANGALDESHI chittagong port posted an 11 per cent increase in container throughput to three million TEU in fiscal 2020-21, according to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), reports Dakha's New Age.
Imports amounted to 1.7 million TEU while exports stood at 1.4 million TEU. Some 4,062 ships have called. Bigger ships are now able to dock.
According to the statistics, the Chittagong port has advanced in all the three categories of container, cargo goods and shipping.
CPA chairman Mohammad Shahjahan said despite having risk, the port was fully operational at this time of crisis to keep the country's economy afloat.
'I have taken the risk for the people of the country. Some of the ports across the world have the record of handling 30 lakh [three million] TEU within a year. We reached the record and it will increase our ranking,' he said.
Rear Admiral Shahjahan said Chittagong port is now a member of the 'Three Million Club' which proves Bangladesh's economy is strengthening.
Port director Enamul Karim said an average of 9,200 TEU are being handled daily and if Patenga Jetty is launched in the future, the volume will increase.
