Chinese ports' July box throughput rises 6.9pc YoY to 22.77m TEU

PORTS in China collectively handled 22.77 million TEU in July, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.9 per cent, according to data from the nation's Ministry of Transport (MOT).

A breakdown of the results showed that coastal ports handled 20.16 million TEU, up 6.6 per cent compared to July 2018, while 2.61 million TEU were moved to and from inland river ports, up 9.5 per cent, reported Hellenic shipping News.



In the first seven months of the year, total throughput increased by 5.2 per cent compared to the same period last year to reach 149.76 million TEU. Within this total, coastal ports handled 132.75 million TEU, up 4.5 per cent. Inland river ports saw 17.02 million TEU pass through their terminals, up 11.2 per cent.



Within the January to July period, the top three performing coastal ports continue to be Shanghai with 25.39 million TEU, a year-on-year increase of 5.5 per cent. In second place was Ningbo-Zhoushan with 16.42 million TEU, up 6.1 per cent. In third place was the port of Shenzhen, where container volumes grew by 1.7 per cent to 14.68 million TEU.
