CHINA is reopening its main train route with North Korea after a five-month hiatus due to the Covid crisis, reports Bloomberg.
Foreign ministry representative Wang Wenbin declared the cargo rail link between china and North Korea is reopening, after service was halted in April to control the Covid crisis.
'The two sides will continue to strengthen coordination to ensure the steady and secure transport of goods, and contribute to friendly relations between China and the DPRK,' said Mr Wang.
The rail connection between the city of Dandong in China and Sinuiju in North Korea is the nation's main link to China.
The link was closed in 2020 near the start of the Covid crisis when North Korea shut the borders to prevent Covid 19 from entering.
North Korea's trade with China dropped in 2020 when the border was closed, causing a blow to North Korea.
Reopening the trade route could take pressure off North Korea after stalled nuclear disarmament talks with the US, where the Biden administration dangled financial rewards in exchange for steps to wind down its atomic arsenal.
North Korea appears to be returning to provocations, recently firing off its first ballistic missile since June.
The nation is also making preparations for its first nuclear test since 2017.
The US push to isolate Russia over Russia's war in Ukraine and animosity toward China, has allowed North Korea to strengthen its nuclear deterrent without fear of facing more sanctions at the UN Security Council.
