MARINE terminals at the Port of New York and New Jersey are looking to add 500 employees to their longshore workforce, reports IHS Media
The New York Shipping Association (NYSA) filed a request with the Waterfront Commission, the port's labour oversight agency, to hire an additional 152 new longshore workers for marine terminals in Bayonne, New Jersey, and Staten Island, and Brooklyn, New York, and 130 checkers that could work throughout the port.
The openings come on top of 150 workers that NYSA is in the process of hiring for terminals in Elizabeth and Newark, New Jersey.
Another 60 jobs are available at the New York-New Jersey's roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) and cruise terminals.
The opening of a total 492 positions would be the third-highest amount that NYSA has applied for since 2017.
'We value our collaboration with the New York Shipping Association on the hiring of additional longshore workers.' said International Longshoremen's Association spokesman James McNamara.
NYSA hired 89 longshore workers for the three terminals in 2018 and another 114 workers combined in 2019 and 2020.
The Red Hook terminal in Brooklyn is also getting a new vessel service from Seaboard Marine from South America.
