ACCORDING to the latest trade statistics from the Port of Brisbane, container throughput in May reached 126,918 TEU, showing a two per cent increase compared to May of the previous year, reports North Sydney's Daily Cargo News.
The port experienced a growth in containerised imports during the same period, handling 64,266 TEU, marking an eight per cent increase from May 2022.
Among the import categories, the largest increase was in 'import other,' which saw a 7.8 per cent rise to reach 28,844 TEU.
Containerised imports of building products increased 5.5 per cent to 6,202 TEU.
However, there was a 14 per cent decrease in household items, totalling 5,625 TEU, while electrical equipment remained nearly unchanged at 4,783 TEU.
On the other hand, containerised exports from the Port of brisbane decreased in May, dropping 7.9 per cent year on year to 55,675 TEU in May.
The largest exported commodity category was 'export other,' which amounted to 11,419 TEU, showing a decrease of 16 per cent compared to May 2022.
Agricultural seeds ranked second, with 6,287 TEU, experiencing a significant increase of 23 per cent compared to the previous year.
Meat products followed closely with 5,493 TEU, reflecting an 18.6 per cent increase from May 2022, while cotton reached 3,226 TEU, indicating an 18 per cent rise.
Empty container exports amounted to 26,107 TEU in May this year, marking a decline of 15.7 per cent compared to the same month in 2022.
