BRAZIL's Porto Itapoa has achieved a container volume record having surpassed the million TEU mark in the first 10 months of 2024, reports London's Port Technology International.
The previous record took 12 months to achieve, meaning the port surpassed its performance by 67 days.
This record is partly due to the completion of Phase III of the port's expansion in the first half of 2024. As a result, Porto Itapoa increased the size of its yard to a capacity of 455,000 square metres.
The new infrastructure enables the port to store 31,000 TEU and handle 1.8 million TEU each year.
In addition, Phase IV is already underway so as to meet the increasing demand both domestically and internationally. The expansion will add a further 120,000 square metres to the yard, as well as provide new high-tech machinery.
'This expansion shows that we remain committed to providing a more efficient service with a greater logistical capacity and establishes Porto Itapoa as a real giant in the port industry,' said Ricardo Arten, the CEO of Porto Itapoa.
Said Sergni Pessoa Rosa, port operations chief: 'This is the result of regular investment, which has allowed us to continuously improve our operations. For example, this terminal now has the most container cranes in Santa Catarina. We have seven robust, technologically advanced machines, as well as the largest storage yard.'
