THE Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach each had their best Aprils ever with Long Beach beating its all-time record set 13 years ago with last month's 628,121 TEU while LA came in with 736,466 TEU its best April in its 112-year history.
LA's April imports were essentially flat at 360,745 TEU compared to 361,108 TEU last April. Exports decreased 5.6 per cent to 155,533 TEUs. But empties soared 22.5 per cent to 220,189 TEU.
Ditto Long Beach: Imports in April 2019 only rose 1.8 per cent to 317,883 TEU. Exports even decreased 12.7 per cent to 123,804 TEU. Again empties told the story, rising 13.5 per cent to 186,435 TEU.
Said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka: 'Despite heightened uncertainty in global trade, we continue to invest and prepare our infrastructure and services to provide the best value for our customers.'
Port of Long Beach executive director Mario Cordero said the surge in empties shows the lingering impacts of the rush of imported cargo in fourth quarter of 2018 as retailers stocked goods to outrun potential tariffs.
