ASIA-EUROPE trade volumes were down three per cent year on year in May to 1.33 million TEU, according to the latest Container Trades Statistics.
Year-to-date volumes were worse, 3.3 per cent down year on year to six million TEU during the first five months. But month-to-month, May was 14.5 per cent better than April's 11.6 million TEU.
Asia-west Med/north Africa volumes fell the most, 4.7 per cent to 234,557 TEU, while those to the east Med and Black Sea slipped 0.2 per cent to 230,589 TEU.
The Asia-north Europe trade, representing the bulk of trade into the Europe from Asian ports, witnessed a 3.4 per cent drop in May to 864,448 TEU.
For the first five months of the year, volumes on the trade are down from four million TEU to 3.9 million TEU or 3.1 per cent.
The Container Trades Statistics' freight rate index for the Asia-north Europe trade fell to 53 points in May after yet another unsuccessful attempt by carriers to charge more.
With the index falling to its lowest level since 2009 the question now is whether the historic lows on the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index in June will be repeated.
