THE US Federal Aviation Administration (F) is to award US$616

THE US Federal Aviation Administration (F) is to award US$616.9 million in airport infrastructure grants for 408 projects at 226 airports. The decision marks the fourth increment in funding under the $3.18 billion Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The airport infrastructure projects include upgrades and new construction for runways, taxiways, aprons, terminals, aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles, snow removal equipment and two firefighting training facilities, reported American Shipper.

US airports receive a certain amount of AIP entitlement funding annually based on activity levels and project needs. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, the F can supplement them with discretionary funding.

The nation operates 3,323 airports and 5,000 paved runways, with civil aviation accounting for $1.6 trillion in annual economic activity, according to the F.
