TT Club praises UK Parliament's debate on freight crime, highlighting its economic impact and the need for better resources to tackle the issue.

The UK's House of Commons debate held last month recognized the urgent need for resources specifically aimed at combating freight crime, according to a statement from the global freight insurance provider TT Club.

This debate marked a significant step in addressing an issue that greatly affects public safety and the UK's economy, particularly as the current government relies on future growth in this sector.

The National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) is currently under-supported and under-funded. Its specialist freight crime investigation team consists of just one full-time police officer on secondment, along with a part-time analyst and a part-time data entry clerk, leaving it ill-equipped to tackle organized crime on a national scale.

TT Club has long supported NaVCIS both financially and practically.

Mike Yarwood, Managing Director of Loss Prevention at TT Club, stated: "We very much welcomed the airing of this issue at a legislative level. The detailed aspects of both opportunistic and well-planned theft, the lack of secure overnight parking facilities, the identification of crime hotspots, and concerns over driver safety—which is discouraging female recruits—were all discussed, highlighting their significance as priorities to be addressed."

The UK's road haulage industry, responsible for moving 89 percent of all goods and 98 percent of agricultural and food products, contributes GBP 13.5 billion (US$ 16.9 billion) to the economy, representing 5.6 percent of the UK's GDP. Every pound generated by the logistics industry creates three pounds down the supply chain, underscoring the widespread impact of freight crime on the UK economy.

Rachel Taylor MP, who led the parliamentary debate, emphasized the political implications, stating, "Tackling freight crime is essential to achieving the Government's five missions."

TT Club will continue its efforts in this area. Mr. Yarwood serves as vice-chair of the industry-led HGV Parking Capacity and Standards Task and Finish group, established with the support of the UK's Department for Transport.

He is leading a workstream focused on standards at lorry parking facilities and is collaborating with NaVCIS Freight and other industry stakeholders to produce an industry-led report that will advise the government on recommendations to reduce freight crime.
