Trump's executive order imposes 10% to 100% tariffs on imported drones, effective September 3, 2026, citing national security concerns.

The White House has issued a formal proclamation confirming that President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing ad valorem tariffs ranging from 10% to 100% on imported drones and drone components.

Citing national security concerns and invoking Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the administration has directed that the new tariff measures take effect on September 3, 2026, with certain non-sensitive drone components subject to a deferred implementation date of February 9, 2027.

The tariff structure is organized into four tiers:

    * 100% applies to drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms and equipped with integrated thermal imaging systems, as well as associated drone docking stations and select critical components - representing the highest level of tariff adjustment in this measure.

    * 25% applies to consumer-grade and recreational small drones that do not incorporate the sensitive capabilities described above.

    * 15% applies to drones and components originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, and Switzerland.

    * 10% applies to drones originating from the United Kingdom, provided their hardware, software, and technology are sourced from the aforementioned regions or from the United States.

According to the White House proclamation, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick determined through investigation that foreign manufacturers have achieved a significant degree of import penetration in the drone sector, and that the United States has become excessively dependent on foreign-sourced drones and components. Furthermore, drones and related equipment produced by certain foreign entities have been identified as posing tangible security risks. The tariff measures are designed to reduce American reliance on foreign drone supply chains, protect domestic industry, and reinforce national security interests.
