Turkey's Blue Homeland Law sparks panic in Greece, seen as a potential 'Second Casus Belli' threatening maritime sovereignty.
The Blue Homeland Law is Coming: Major Panic in Athens!
Preparations for the Blue Homeland Law, which will certify Turkey's maritime sovereignty, have caused panic in Greece. This development has been regarded in the neighboring country as a 'Second Casus Belli.'
In a broadcast on Habertürk, hosted by Esra Hanım, the draft of the 'Blue Homeland Law,' aimed at legally securing Turkey's rights in its maritime jurisdiction areas, was discussed. Lawyer Captain Cahit İstikbal, who participated as a studio guest, and retired Colonel Ünal Atabay, who joined via live connection, evaluated the legal and strategic dimensions of the law, while Taki Berberakis reported on the reactions in Greece.
'Our Territorial Waters Are National Soil'
Lawyer Captain Cahit İstikbal emphasized that one of the fundamental requirements of statehood is to establish full sovereignty over the 'country' borders, stating that territorial waters are also an inseparable part of national soil. İstikbal referred to the Territorial Waters Law, saying, 'The territorial waters of the Republic of Turkey are our blue homeland. Just as we have full sovereignty over our land, we also have full sovereignty over our territorial waters.'
Pointing out Greece's maneuvers in the Aegean, İstikbal noted that the Athens administration, unable to extend its territorial waters to 12 miles (casus belli - cause for war), is attempting to create a de facto situation under the guise of environmental initiatives such as 'marine parks.' İstikbal highlighted that Greece aims to restrict ship activities and control the region by using underwater meadows in the Southern Aegean as a pretext, which would cover 70% of the area.
'A Clear Message to the European Union and Greece'
Retired Colonel Ünal Atabay, addressing the strategic importance of the law, stated that the Blue Homeland concept, which has been defended as a 'doctrine' for many years and practically implemented in the field, has now been institutionalized. Atabay remarked, 'This law is the formal transformation of our geopolitical advantage and the opportunities granted to us by our geography into power.'
Atabay drew attention to the unilateral agreements made by the Greek Cypriot Administration with countries like Egypt, Israel, and Lebanon, disregarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the Eastern Mediterranean, stating that the new law is a strong step against the usurpation of international law. He also emphasized that the law serves as a 'balancing adjustment' against the European Union's border determination efforts over the Aegean and Greece's aggressive attitudes.
Panic of 'Second Casus Belli' in Greece
Turkey's historic step has created a seismic effect in neighboring Greece. Taki Berberakis, reporting from Athens, noted that the law was met with great surprise and panic in the Greek media.
Berberakis stated that the Greek press has brought the issue to the headlines, with the newspaper Kathimerini highlighting that the Aegean is at the center of the law, while Dimokratia labeled the law as 'Casus Belli (Cause for War) Number 2,' expressing concerns with headlines like 'They will seize half of our islands.' Although Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis attempted to downplay the decision as 'a unilateral action of no value,' it was reported that the overall picture has created deep fear in Athens regarding the possibility of the law being implemented.
