Swissport has trebled its cargo handling capacity at East Midlands Airport by moving into larger premises as volumes double, reported London's Air Cargo Week. The expansion comes amid a 17.4 per cent rise in airport cargo volumes to over 103,000 tonnes between May and July. Four new freighter airlines operating 777 and 747 aircraft have driven growth at the airport.
Swissport now handles around 37,000 tonnes annually at East Midlands, providing services for Saudia Cargo, Ethiopian Cargo, Atlas Air and One Air. The company expects volumes to exceed 50,000 tonnes in 2026.
The new facility, which opened in April, is equipped with advanced cargo systems and supports 21 weekly flights. It forms part of Swissport's wider strategy to become a leading e-commerce handler across its network of 117 warehouses.
Growth at East Midlands has prompted development plans including four runway-side plots for new warehousing and aircraft stands to meet projected 54 per cent cargo volume increases over the next 20 years.
Swissport's expanded premises feature a new truck dock, a caster deck system with capacity for 60 aircraft cargo positions, and an automated speed lane for unitised cargo flow.
