Shanghai Port achieved a record 203,881 TEU in one day, overcoming Typhoon Bavi's disruptions, as reported by Beijing's Global Times.

Shanghai Port handled a record 203,881 TEU in a single day on Saturday, surpassing 200,000 TEU for the first time despite disruptions from Typhoon Bavi, reported Beijing's Global Times.

Shanghai International Port (Group) stated that this achievement reflects strong resilience and effective coordination. Typhoon Bavi had halted operations for four days in mid-July, creating a backlog as vessels arrived simultaneously once conditions improved.

The port group coordinated resources to clear congestion and restore capacity. During the recovery period, daily throughput remained stable at 172,000 TEU before the new record was set.

Zhao Nan of the Shanghai International Shipping Research Center noted that this milestone demonstrates China's ports' ability to manage disruptions through intelligent management, scheduling, and infrastructure support.

In 2025, Shanghai Port handled 55.06 million TEU, retaining its position as the world's busiest container port for the 16th consecutive year, according to Xinhua.

Under Shanghai's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), annual throughput is targeted to exceed 58 million TEU by 2030. The plan positions Shanghai Port as the leading hub in the Yangtze River Delta cluster.

Analysts stated that continued improvements in transshipment capacity, digitalization, and green development will strengthen Shanghai Port's role in supporting China's domestic and international trade flows and reinforce its place in the global shipping network.
