NIK 421 departs Varna for Bulgaria's 35th Antarctic expedition, lasting 162 days and supporting vital scientific research.
The NIK 421, which will participate in Bulgaria's 35th Antarctic expedition, is expected to depart from Varna Marine Terminal at 12:00 local time. The vessel, affiliated with the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, will make its fifth trip to the Bulgarian research station on Livingston Island.
According to the program announced by Dragomir Mateev, Vice President of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, the ship's journey will last a total of 162 days. The vessel will remain around the South Shetland Islands from the beginning of January until February 20, providing a working platform at sea for scientists during this period.
Biologists, geologists, and environmental scientists will be part of the expedition. Among the research projects introduced by the Naval Academy is the Bulgarian team's first underwater archaeology project. The new laboratory that was commissioned during the previous expedition at the station on Livingston allows researchers to examine the samples brought from the field on-site.
