Bulk carriers aged 18-22 are being sold as owners seek cash and modernize fleets, driven by high scrap values and investor interest.
Market sources indicate that bulk carriers, particularly those aged 18 to 22 years, are being put up for sale due to strong scrap values and continued investor interest. Shipowners are aiming to generate cash on one hand while pursuing a strategy to renew their fleets with younger and more environmentally friendly tonnage on the other.
Increasing environmental regulations, operational costs, and financing conditions are also cited as factors accelerating the disposal of older vessels. According to TradeWinds, current price levels suggest that sales, especially of older bulk tonnage, may continue in the upcoming period.
Sales of older bulk carriers have gained momentum.
Greek shipowner Cape Shipping has capitalized on the 'asset-play' opportunity window that has opened in the second-hand market by selling one of the oldest bulk carriers in its fleet.
