Russia's Yamal LNG project struggles to redirect exports to Asia by 2027 due to logistical challenges and fleet limitations, warns CHNL.

Russia's Yamal LNG project faces a major logistics challenge as Moscow prepares to redirect exports from Europe to Asia in 2027, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.

The European Union has approved a ban on Russian LNG imports starting January 2027, forcing Yamal shipments away from Europe. Norway's Center for High North Logistics (CHNL) warned that Russia's fleet of 14 Arc7, 6 Arc4, and 5 non-ice-class carriers will struggle to meet Asian demand.

CHNL projected that the fleet could complete only 120-130 voyages annually, which is less than half the volumes expected for 2024-2025. Longer distances to Asia and reliance on Arc4 and non-ice-class vessels for transshipment limit winter navigation, thereby reducing turnover compared to shorter European routes.

Russia's shipbuilding sector is constrained by sanctions, having completed only two Arc7 vessels since 2023. CHNL stated that the expansion of ice-class tonnage is essential, but progress has stalled. Alternatives include boosting transshipment capacity for longer voyages via the Suez Canal or Cape of Good Hope.

Eikland Energy estimated that Novatek would need to charter 25-35 additional tankers from 2027 to sustain current export levels of 18 million tons annually. Without this, Yamal LNG risks losing competitiveness in Asia.

Europe remains the largest customer, with France and Belgium absorbing most shipments. In 2025, out of 270 cargoes from Sabetta, 88 went to France, 57 to Belgium, and 50 to China. In February 2026, all 21 shipments, equal to 1.5 million tons, went to EU ports, with none sent to Asia.
