In the semi-autonomous Puntland region of Somalia, security forces successfully rescued the Palau-flagged oil products tanker MT Honour 25 from the hands of pirates.
According to a statement dated September 29 reported by Reuters, the pirates killed three Pakistani, one Myanmar, and one Indian crew member before the operation began.
Five dead, four injured
According to the Puntland Ministry of Information, three of the deceased were Pakistani, one was from Myanmar, and one was Indian. It was reported that three of the injured crew members were Pakistani and one was Indian. During the operation, 16 pirates were captured.
Under pirate control since April
The tanker, which had 17 crew members at the time of its abduction, had been under the control of pirates since April.
According to the records of Operation Atalanta, the incident was reported on April 21. A Japanese maritime patrol aircraft confirmed the vessel's position in Somali waters. European Union Naval Force elements arrived in the region on April 25 and gathered information regarding the situation on the ship.
Second tanker also rescued
The Puntland Maritime Police announced that the MT Eureka tanker, which was hijacked in May, was also rescued on September 29. It was noted that the pirates fled to the shore as security forces approached and then headed inland. Efforts are ongoing to capture those who escaped.
Five out of six vessels rescued
The previous week, the Sibu 1 tanker, which was hijacked in August and subject to U.S. sanctions, was rescued. With the latest operations, five out of six vessels that were in the hands of pirates at the end of August have been rescued.
