Passenger Ship Accident at Corfu Port: Female Passenger Fell into the Sea, Captain Taken into Custody.
GREECE - Following an accident caused by strong winds at Corfu Port in Greece, the captain of a large passenger ship has been taken into custody.
The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, July 1, at Corfu Port. The Bahamas-flagged passenger ship, one of four vessels anchored in the port, had its mooring lines severed due to the strong winds in effect.
At the time of the accident, it was reported that the ship's gangway was lowered and passengers were disembarking before the planned departure and then returning to the ship. With the severing of the lines, the gangway shifted from its position. During this time, a 56-year-old female passenger from New Zealand lost her balance and fell into the sea.
Crew members and port officials quickly intervened and rescued the woman from the water. The woman, who sustained minor injuries to her face and body, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance after receiving first aid at the scene. Her health condition has been reported as stable.
Following the incident, the Hellenic Coast Guard initiated an investigation. As part of the investigation, the 56-year-old Italian captain of the ship was taken into custody.
The captain is being processed under the charge of 'endangering the life of a person or leaving them in a helpless situation' as defined in the Greek Penal Code. Additionally, he is being investigated for potentially failing to fulfill his legal duty of care towards the passengers.
Despite the incident, the passenger ship was allowed to continue its voyage. It has been reported that the investigation regarding the accident is being conducted by the Corfu Central Port Authority.
