THE Australian port of Melbourne handled a total of 241,985 TEU in June, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.1 per cent. However, compared to the previous month of May, volumes were down 2.4 per cent. The decline in throughput was attributed to significant decreases in the Bass Island trade (down 3,121 TEU) and empties were down 3,622 TEU. The mainland coastal trade fell by just 235 TEU, reported Daily Cargo News, North Sydney.
On the other hand, the port's overseas container trade rose by 952 TEU to 159,327 TEU, of which full overseas imports amounted to 99,688 TEU, and full overseas exports totalled 59,639 TEU.
Trade with the Apple Isle totalled 18,335 TEU of full containers, 8,463 TEU of which were imports across Bass Strait, and 9,872 TEU were exports. Mainland coastal trade totalled 6,412 TEU of full containers: 5,747 TEU were exports and 665 TEU were imports.
The top containerised commodity at the port of Melbourne are miscellaneous manufacturing, followed by furniture and then electrical equipment.
In June the port handled 34,525 motor vehicles, which equates to 587,288 revenue tonnes, plus 82,544rt of break bulk, 616,731rt of liquid bulk, and 294,798rt of dry bulk.
