On August 25, 2026, the Conference on Accelerating the Development of a Strong Transportation Nation was held in Wuhan, during which the Ministry of Transport announced 12 pilot cases as landmark achievements in advancing China's transport strategy.
These cases focus on six strategic priorities, including modernizing transportation networks, digital upgrades, and green transitions. Among them, Qingdao Port's Fully Automated Container Terminal was selected for its groundbreaking advancements.
As China's economy grew rapidly, so did the demand for efficient and intelligent port operations. However, the early development of automated container terminals in China faced significant barriers. These included the absence of a theoretical framework for construction, restricted access to Western technology, and reliance on imported components for key systems. In response, Qingdao Port prioritized efficiency, intelligence, and technological independence, driving over a decade of collaborative innovation among industries, academia, and research institutions.
The result was Asia's first fully automated container terminal and the world's first 'Hydrogen + 5G' intelligent green port. Qingdao also developed China's first independently operated automated terminal, achieving milestones in layout planning, management systems, and equipment design. By relying on domestically developed technologies, the port established a comprehensive framework for intelligent terminal construction and operations. Key breakthroughs included a core management system that coordinates all terminal operations and advancements in intelligent integrated equipment.
Qingdao Port's automated terminal now handles over 320,000 TEUs per 100 meters of berth, frequently surpassing global efficiency benchmarks for automated operations. Additionally, the port has scaled the use of clean energy sources such as hydrogen and photovoltaics, transitioning from automation to integrated digital intelligence and sustainability.
These innovations have propelled technological upgrades across the industry, fostering synergy along the supply chain and creating a self-reliant system for smart port equipment. Qingdao's achievements not only strengthen China's port machinery industry but also align with the Belt and Road Initiative, offering advanced solutions to global partners.
