The LPG tanker GAS NERO, which rescued injured sailors from GAS AURA, was attacked by a drone in the Black Sea, raising security concerns.
BLACK SEA | The LPG tanker named GAS NERO, which played a critical role in the evacuation of two injured Filipino sailors from the ship GAS AURA that was attacked by a drone in the Kavkaz region of Russia, has now become a target of a drone attack itself while sailing in the Black Sea.
According to a statement from the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the two injured crew members evacuated from the GAS AURA, which was attacked on July 15 in Kavkaz, were safely delivered to a Coast Guard helicopter by GAS NERO on July 16 off the coast of Sinop.
After the evacuation operation, the LPG tanker continued its voyage and was attacked by a drone in the Black Sea. As a result of the attack, a fire broke out in the tank at the bow of the ship, and the vessel requested assistance.
A fire-fighting tugboat dispatched to the area under the coordination of the Samsun Port Authority quickly reached the scene and intervened in the fire. According to officials, the fire was brought under control and completely extinguished.
Arrived in Trabzon
After the fire was extinguished, GAS NERO was directed to Trabzon for repairs and arrived there at 16:00. The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs announced that the ship was kept in drift before the shipyard operations.
The same ship at the center of two critical incidents
Just one day prior, GAS NERO had safely evacuated the injured sailors from the GAS AURA ship that was attacked in Russia/Kavkaz. Following this, its own attack while continuing its voyage in the Black Sea has once again raised concerns about the security risks faced by commercial vessels in the region.
