THE US west coast port of Long Beach has announced that container throughput in May increased 17.2 per cent to 583,588 TEU compared to the same month a year earlier. This is the highest monthly volume since October 2010.
During May imports amounted to 305,498 TEU, up 22.2 per cent year on year and was the highest volume since August 2010, while exports rose 13.9 per cent to 147,073 TEU, the highest level since October 2010.
Empty containers increased 10.2 per cent year on year in May to 131,017 TEU, a written statement from port authorities said.
For the first five months of 2013, cargo container volume rose 17.2 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier. This included 19.3 per cent more imports, 12.2 per cent growth in exports and 18.9 per cent more empties.
Port authorities attributed the gains to larger ships calling at the port more frequently and the addition of service lines starting in the latter part of 2012.
