Import containers experienced a 13.5 per cent April increase to 264,337 TEU year on year while exports went up 14.5 per cent to 137,864 TEU.
Neighbouring Los Angeles suffered a 9.5 per cent year-on-year decrease in April volumes, attributed largely to MSC and CMA CGM's moving services to Long Beach.
Box volumes at the combined Los Angeles-Long Beach complex experienced a one per cent drop in April year on year with a three per cent fall in containerised exports and a one per cent decline in import volumes.
Empty containers were up 8.1 per cent to 117,263 TEU. For the first four months of 2013, container volume was up 17.2 per cent - including 18.5 per cent more imports, 11.8 per cent more exports and 21.5 per cent more empties.
"These increases are in part due to the larger ships calling at the port more frequently and the addition of service lines starting in later 2012," said the Long Beach port authority.
