Laura DiBella has been named chairwoman of the Federal Maritime Commission by President Trump, marking a significant leadership change.
Laura DiBella has been appointed chairwoman of the Federal Maritime Commission by President Donald Trump, reported American Shipper. She was sworn in as commissioner in December after Senate confirmation, alongside fellow nominee Robert Harvey of Florida.
Ms. DiBella succeeds Louis Sola, whose term ended in 2025. She becomes the third woman to lead the FMC, following Helen Delich Bentley and Elaine Chao. Ms. DiBella previously served as Florida's first female commerce secretary.
The appointment comes as the Trump administration advances plans to revitalize the US maritime sector. The FMC, which regulates ocean shipping, is composed of five commissioners serving staggered five-year terms, with no more than three from the same political party.
Current commissioners are Democrats Max Vekich and Daniel Maffei, and Republican Rebecca Dye, who has served since 2002. Mr. Harvey is expected to fill the vacant seat once confirmed.
As chairwoman, Ms. DiBella will serve as chief executive and administrative officer of the commission.
