KMTC secures six 1,800 TEU containerships from HD Hyundai for $258 million, enhancing its fleet for intra-Asia routes.
Korea Marine Transport Co (KMTC) has been identified as the owner behind six feeder containerships ordered at HD Hyundai Group yards, reports Singapore's Splash 247.
Shipbuilding sources indicated that KMTC was the Asian buyer in a KRW372.4 billion (US$258 million) contract disclosed last week by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, which did not name the customer at the time.
The order encompasses six 1,800 TEU vessels to be constructed at Hyundai facilities, with deliveries scheduled between August 2027 and June 2028. KMTC, ranked 17th globally among container carriers, operates more than 60 ships primarily on intra-Asia routes.
This latest order extends KMTC's long-standing relationship with Hyundai yards. The company has been transitioning into larger vessel segments, having ordered 13,000 TEU ships last year and two 8,700 TEU vessels at HD Hyundai Samho in November 2024, priced at approximately $115 million each.
