Container throughput from Tanjung Pelepas and Pasir Gudang will merge under Port of Johor for improved global rankings, says Malaysia's Transport Minister.
Container throughput from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Pasir Gudang Port will be consolidated under the single name of the Port of Johor for global ranking purposes, reports London's Port Technology International.
Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that the change followed official approval from Lloyd's List. The revision alters how container volumes are reported for the international rankings rather than changing the physical or daily operations of the two maritime hubs.
Mr. Loke indicated that the consolidation would strengthen Malaysia's global position in maritime rankings alongside Port Klang, which already ranks among the top 10 container ports in the world. He noted that previously, the southern region ranked lower because the statistics were split, even though the Port of Tanjung Pelepas individually handled more than 14 million TEU in 2025.
The name Port of Johor was selected to represent the broader geographical area. Mr. Loke added that the combined reporting supports national aims to establish two major Malaysian entities among the busiest container hubs in the world.
