Ukraine sinks a Russian container ship and attacks oil refineries, intensifying its campaign against Russian infrastructure amid ongoing conflict.

Ukraine struck deep inside Russia, sinking a sanctioned container ship and hitting three oil refineries in Bashkortostan, reported Kiev's Euromaidan Press.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Russian-flagged Yanina, with a capacity of more than 100,000 tons, was sent to the bottom by Ukrainian forces. He added that the refineries, which process millions of tons of oil annually, were set ablaze nearly 1,600 kilometers from Ukraine.

Zelensky framed the attacks as deliberate strikes on infrastructure sustaining Russia's war, contrasting them with Moscow's overnight barrage of 27 ballistic missiles and 185 drones that killed at least nine civilians in Kiev.

He emphasized that Ukraine's soldiers were 'returning the war to Russia' by targeting defined objects such as refineries and ships, rather than residential districts.

The refinery campaign has idled nearly half of Russia's capacity, according to Ukraine's General Staff. Since August 2025, the strikes have cost the industry US$13.5 billion and forced fuel rationing across most Russian regions.

The Bashkortostan strikes extend a near-nightly campaign against refineries, pipelines, and depots, demonstrating Ukraine's ability to hit targets more than 1,300 kilometers into Russia's rear.
