Jeff Bezos is selling his $500 million mega yacht, Koru, citing its excessive recognition as the main reason for the sale.
The U.S.-based magazine publication Page Six has confirmed that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has put his mega yacht, valued at approximately $500 million, up for sale. According to sources speaking to the newspaper, the primary reason for Bezos's decision was that the yacht had become 'too recognizable' for him.
Known as one of the most remarkable yachts in the world, Koru stands out not only for its massive length of 417 feet and its majestic silhouette with three masts but also for the unique figurehead at its bow. At the front of the yacht, there is a life-sized bust carved from wood and adorned with gold details, representing Bezos's second wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos.
Koru, which ranks among the largest sailing yachts, is typically accompanied by a support vessel named Abeona, valued at around $75 million. Designed by Damen, this vessel serves as a helicopter pad, allowing helicopter pilot Sanchez to take off and land. It is still unclear whether Abeona will be sold together with Koru or separately.
However, Koru's impressive dimensions also bring some operational challenges. It has been noted that annual maintenance costs reach eight-figure sums, and the yacht is said to be too large to fit into many private marinas and yacht terminals. As a result, Koru is often spotted in commercial port areas, near cargo ships, rather than at luxury clubs and boutique marinas.
The construction process of the mega yacht had also been a topic of public debate for a long time. For Koru, built at the Oceanco shipyard in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to reach the sea, it had to pass under the historic Koningshaven Bridge. Due to the height of the masts making the passage impossible, the shipyard had suggested temporarily dismantling the bridge. This proposal drew backlash from local residents, with some groups planning to protest as the yacht passed. Ultimately, Koru was quietly taken out of the shipyard at night with its masts removed, allowing it to pass without any modifications to the bridge. The masts were later reassembled at another location.
