ISDEMİR begins an EIA for a 12,515 m² land reclamation project worth 99.5 million lira between its ports in Iskenderun.

ISDEMİR to Invest 99.5 Million Lira in Additional Filling for Port Back Area

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process has been initiated for the 12,515 square meter marine filling planned by ISDEMİR between the South Container Port and Atakaş Port in İskenderun. The project foresees the filling of approximately 100,000 cubic meters, and no new pier will be constructed as part of this project.

İskenderun Iron and Steel Inc. has started the Environmental Impact Assessment process for its planned 12,515 square meter Additional Filling Area Project in İskenderun, Hatay.

The project, with an investment cost of 99.5 million lira, covers the marine area located between ISDEMİR's existing South Container Port and Atakaş Port in the Karayılan neighborhood. The filling is planned to close the gap between the previously completed EIA process for the 150,000 square meter area and the existing port area.

According to the information in the project file, approximately 100,000 cubic meters of filling material will be placed into the sea. The works, expected to commence after the completion of the permit processes, are aimed to be completed by 2027.

No New Pier or Port Operations Will Be Established

The EIA application states that no new pier or independent port operations will be established on the additional filling area. The area will be used to ensure coastal integrity, site organization, and to support the logistics infrastructure in the port back area.

ISDEMİR's broader logistics back area plan includes warehouses, container loading stations, truck parking, empty container storage areas, maintenance and repair facilities, and management buildings. The additional filling is aimed to be a complementary part of these investments.

However, the initiation of the EIA process does not mean that the project has received environmental approval or that construction has begun. Decisions will be made after the opinions of relevant institutions, coastal regulations, the nature of the filling material, hydrodynamic effects, and assessments regarding the marine ecosystem have been completed.

In particular, filling the gap between the two port structures requires technical examination in terms of current regulation, sediment transport, and coastal morphology. 'Closing the gap' is a small sentence in engineering; the response from the sea can sometimes result in a thick report.
