Hanwha Defense USA announces a $269 million shipbuilding contract for the U.S. Navy, set to begin in Philadelphia in 2027.
Hanwha Defense USA announced on November 2 that it has received its first shipbuilding contract for the U.S. Navy. The company, chosen by TOTE Services, will construct a medium-sized landing ship valued at $269 million at the Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia.
According to TOTE Services President Jeff Dixon, the construction schedule set by the shipyard allows work to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027. The delivery of the first ship is expected in 2030. Production for three additional ships will depend on the exercise of options in the contract.
The order is the first step in a program that aims for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to reach a total of 35 ships. TOTE Services' $2.2 billion contract encompasses the management of the program's construction. The Philadelphia shipyard had previously built and delivered four National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV) under the same management model with TOTE Services.
