INDIAN authorities have announced that airport operator GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) - a joint venture company established between the GMR Group, Airports Authority of India (I), Government of Telangana and Malaysia Airports Holding - is to double its cargo handling capacity at Hyderabad. GHIAL currently handles 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually, despite the fact that its facilities were designed to handle only 100,000 tonnes, according to New Indian Express.
GHIAL chief executive officer SGK Kishore said Hyderabad (HYD) is currently able to operate past design capacity due to its efficient operations, and that with the new expansion, cargo capacity will double from 150,000 tonnes to 300,000 tonnes.
The facilities will be built on a 100-acre parcel adjacent to the GMR Aerospace & Industrial Park.
GHIAL is conducting a study at Hyderabad to determine the types of cargo and facilities that will be necessary, but the company anticipates that the terminals will handle perishables, biopharmaceutical and express cargo.
