The IMO identifies 529 vessels with false flags, raising concerns over maritime security and regulatory compliance in global trade.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced that it has identified 529 vessels operating under false flags in international maritime trade. This situation is considered a significant risk in terms of global maritime security and regulatory oversight.
According to the IMO, 529 ships have been recorded as operating with false flags in global maritime transport. The organization’s assessment indicates that some of these vessels are attempting to evade international regulations and sanctions by concealing or misrepresenting their true flag state information.
A report by maritime publication Splash247, based on IMO data, indicates that the use of false flags has particularly increased in connection with the transportation of oil and commodities under sanctions. The IMO noted that some of these vessels are using multiple national flags simultaneously or have inconsistencies in their registration information.
The organization highlighted that this situation poses serious risks in terms of maritime security, insurance processes, accident liability, and sanction enforcement. IMO officials stated that there is a need to enhance data sharing between flag states and port authorities and to tighten the oversight of registration systems.
Experts indicate that vessels operating under false flags reduce traceability in global trade and exacerbate transparency issues, particularly in the tanker market. The IMO's findings have led to an increase in calls for stricter regulations in international shipping.
