Commercial ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz continues to remain well below pre-war levels. Recent data shows that only 6 vessels have made the crossing, while the contraction in oil shipments indicates that price and freight pressures may persist.
The trade congestion that has been ongoing in the Strait of Hormuz for weeks has intensified once again. As the number of ships in one of the most critical transit points in the global energy market drops to single digits, the weakening hopes for an agreement between the U.S. and Iran have pushed back expectations for normalization.
On Monday, only 6 commercial vessels were able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
This figure is significantly below the daily average of approximately 11 ships over the past 10 days. The magnitude of the difference becomes even more striking when compared to the pre-war period.
Before the tensions began, approximately 130-140 ships would pass through the Strait of Hormuz on a normal day. The latest figure reveals that commercial traffic in the strait is only a small fraction of its usual level.
Due to the ability of ships to make crossings by turning off their tracking systems, the visible traffic may not encompass all movements. Nevertheless, the data from recent weeks indicates that commercial maritime transportation is still far from normalizing.
The nature of the recent crossings is also noteworthy from the perspective of the energy market.
