GTT forecasts a global need for 550 new LNG carriers from 2026 to 2035, driven by rising LNG trade and new export projects.
French engineering company Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) announced that approximately 550 new LNG carrier ships will be needed globally between 2026 and 2035 due to the impact of growth in global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade. The company revised its previous estimate of over 450 upwards.
According to GTT, the upward revision of the forecast was influenced particularly by new LNG export projects that will come online in the United States, the increase in global gas demand, and expectations for growth in long-term LNG trade volumes. The company has raised its current order projection to approximately 550 ships for the period from 2026 to 2035.
It is noted that the demand for the LNG carrier fleet is driven not only by new export terminals but also by the renewal of the aging fleet and the transition to new generation ships with higher energy efficiency. GTT is among the leading providers of membrane-type cargo tank technologies used in LNG transportation in the global market.
According to industry data, although there may be a temporary slowdown in LNG ship orders in 2025, it is expected that orders will pick up again starting in 2026 with the commissioning of new LNG production projects. The increase in the United States' LNG export capacity is considered the most significant factor supporting this demand.
